We are familiar with the race to climb Everest to reach various destinations in the solar system, manned or unmanned, but here is a new challenge. This programme recounts a current contest to reach the deepest part of the ocean, called the Mariana Ridge. It is eleven kilometres down at the junction of two tectonic plates in thePacific Ocean, further below sea level than Everest is above.
Four teams are in this race, each with different priorities and using their own frontier technology. One is geared to scientific exploration of this unique environment. The other three have a more showbiz angle, including one involving Titanic director James Cameron to capture a new setting for a cinema production. As with motor racing, this race offers an opportunity and motive to sample different technologies, and gain some scientific insights into a new area of our planet.
