Mona Lisa Production for ARTE
In cold environments, micro-organisms rule. They form the basis of a fragile ecosystem threatened by global warming. Scientists are studying how these species manage to survive in environments as unstable and ephemeral as snow and ice. This production is an episode in a television series looking at how life flourishes under various extreme conditions, including extreme heat and extreme cold. It illustrates how various bizarre forms of life emerge suited to these conditions.
Survivors of Cold, with some telling imagery, also points up some of the less publicized aspects of climate change. It suggests that as the polar regions become warmer, the effects on biodiversity and its consequences need more scrutiny.
