The Basics of Blackjack

Blackjack is a game of cards that pits the player against the dealer. The objective is to get a total card value of 21 or close to it, without going over, and beat the dealer’s hand. The game is played using one or more 52-card decks. Each card has a value of either its number, or face cards at 10 and aces at 1 or 11. Suits are irrelevant. A player may choose to “stay” (end their turn) or “hit” (ask for another card).

If the player’s first two cards add up to 21—an ace and a face card, for example—that is a blackjack, and it pays 6 to 5. The dealer must draw at least one more card in most cases, but if his/her hand is not a blackjack, they win only their original wager. If the dealer’s hand is a blackjack, all players lose their original bet, and all insurance bets are paid at 2 to 1.

A player can also split cards, receiving a second card for each, and play those hands independently of each other. This option can increase the chances of a winning hand, but it is not guaranteed.

Generally, players should stand when their cards total 17 or higher. This is a safer move, as it minimizes the chance of busting and losing the hand. However, some players will hit if their hand totals 16 or less, in order to improve it and possibly reach 21. In this case, the odds are against them, and it is usually best to just stay.

In most games, the dealer will offer players the option to buy insurance against a possible dealer’s blackjack before the dealer deals their own cards. The dealer will reveal his or her hole card (through a small viewing window in the table) before each player acts on their hand. If the dealer has a blackjack, the player will win their original bet and any insurance bets are paid out at a ratio of 2:1.

The basic strategy for playing blackjack involves counting the favorable cards for both the dealer and the other players. This requires a certain level of skill and prior training to be successful. In addition to the basic strategy, players can learn and use a variety of betting systems and card counting aids.
